Protecting a cutting board is a very simple job, but the polishing paste must be a food-safe compound. The most used paste is beeswax, which is 100% eco friendly.
It is a natural wax, which is produced in beehives by the cute honey bees as the building blocks of the hive. It is used for shining and waterproofing different wood objects. Beeswax acts as a protective layer on the surface, enhancing the woods shine and helping it to keep looking better for a longer time.
It’s the most popular choice, not only it smells great but it’s all-natural. It brings out the warmth of the wood, whilst repelling the dirt and water. Hence your cutting board will look great for a while.
You can buy the paste already made, but what is very interesting is that you can actually make the conditioner at your place, which is quite easy as well. You can just mix beeswax with olive or coconut oil, (depending on which you have the access to), 30 drops of grapefruit extract, or just a Vitamin E, adding 10 drops of essential oil and there you have it, your personal polish paste for wood. Once you buy or make your own polishing paste you can get to the second phase, which is not really complicated. All you’ll need is the paste itself, a small rag, and your cutting board, to make it look as good as new. But before you’ll get started, try and clean your cutting board with a paper towel or something else, for it to take away all the surface dirt.
After that, you can get to the polishing part, of your cutting board with beeswax. You should softly apply the paste with your hand, try to apply the compound thinly, and then spread it around with the rag, or a napkin perhaps. Perform this part carefully not to leave out any spots of the board. But consider, that it’ll take some time for the board to dry, this depends on the room where you’re working and what is the humidity and temperature of your workplace. It will affect the drying process but don’t worry, it will dry eventually.
Once the cutting board is dry, use your rag to clean it a bit, this will bring out the sparkle of the wood and voila! Your board is good as new. This is a really simple task, but unfortunately, it’s not permanent. In time you’ll notice that paste is wearing off, but not to worry. You can just repeat this simple job and you’ll be back on the right track with your shiny cutting board and your 100% natural beeswax.
